Two Shelburne County baseball teams hosting provincials in August

Baseball fans from our area will be   treated to  two  separate baseball provincial championship tournaments next month.

Both of these titles will be decided at the Roger Grovestine Complex in Shelburne.

The first of these prestigious events will take place on August 22-24, as the Shelburne County Cubs play host to the 2014 Nova Scotia Midget “AA” Baseball Championship. Six teams will be competing for the coveted banner and the opportunity to represent the province at Atlantics in PEI.

So far this season, the Cubs are leading the Bluenose League with a 10-0 record. “Our team has a real good chance to bring home a title this season,” said Cubs Coach Roddy Conrad. “We have a lot of strong returning players and a veteran team who can get the job done.”

Next on the schedule on August 29-31, will be the Shelburne County Reds, who will be the host team for the 2014 Nova Scotia Bantam “AA” Baseball Championship.

This tournament will have five teams vying for the provincial banner and a spot at the Atlantics, hosted by nearby rival Yarmouth Gateways.

“Going into the season we lost a couple of key players who made other commitments for the summer. But, despite only three returning players and having a young team, our boys have improved and proven they are a contender,” said Coach Andrew Holland. “My assistant coaches, Jonathan Nickerson and Dallas Nickerson, have brought a lot of experience to the team. My players and coaches are working hard to make sure we give ourselves the best chance to win. I know they will represent our communities well.”

The Reds have compiled a 10-3 record to date, with a second place finish last month at their annual invitational.

Both coaches are hoping that lots of local baseball fans will turn out to cheer on these fine young athletes. “This area is very fierce about their sports.” said Conrad. “I know in 2012 we had both the Midget “A” championship in Shelburne and the Midget “AA” championship in Clark’s Harbor. Both teams had tremendous support for those tournaments. We expect it will be the same again here this year.” Both clubs will be competing in some upcoming tournaments and exhibition games in preparation for their respective championships.
