BARRINGTON, N.S. – Tyler Nickerson says over the years he has always told his children, including his sons Wesley and Dawson, that you can never say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ enough.

It’s a message that has stuck and one that was passed on when the father and two sons recently held a tenant appreciation for the tenants of their properties in the Barrington area.

Tyler Nickerson owns a real estate company called Grand Multip Properties Inc., which Wesley manages and Dawson helps out with. Dawson also manages a motel the family operates called Starboard Inn.

Tyler Nickerson says on any given day, and in any given week, there are a multitude of days that bestow appreciation on others – such as teachers, volunteers, firefighters, employees, etc., etc.

The family decided their tenants were also worthy of a day of appreciation. Tyler says it was his sons who came up with the idea.

And so earlier this month a tenant appreciation day was held that included a variety of activities, such as a barbecue, food, washer games, bingo, cards, karaoke, music and more. Tenants and their immediate families were invited. The Nickersons even had t-shirts made for their tenants, and delivered in person the t-shirts to those who weren’t able to attend the event.

Showing appreciation is nothing new for this family.

“I exercise quality time with my crew at the lobster plant, my primary business. We go out on outings once a month, we go bowling, we go to the show, we just have that togetherness,” Tyler says.

“We just thought, why not do something to show the tenants that they’re appreciated as well – a give-back gesture to say thank you and to let them know they’re not just a number on our apartment. We take pride in the tenants we have.”

The Nickersons intend to make this an annual event. Next year they’ll hold it earlier in the year so they can capitalize on the warmer weather.

“We want to make it an annual thing and maybe it will grow into something just bigger and bigger,” says Tyler. “None of them had ever experienced that before as a tenant. They were very thankful. They felt very appreciated. They thought it was an awesome thing and they really enjoyed themselves.”

He added seeing his sons take the initiative in organizing the day made him feel especially proud.
