We make them, you bake them

BROOKLYN, NS - “In this day and age, it takes a lot to keep the doors of any church open,” says Cathie Pearl-Wentzell, member of Queen County’s Brooklyn Baptist Church’s social committee.

“Declining attendance means a decline in givings, so we have to supplement.”

This means being innovative and creative, like the church members are doing with their upcoming pie fundraiser.

The Brooklyn Baptist Church is taking orders until Nov. 10 for eight-inch homemade apple pies for only $8.

This is the first year for the church to hold this fundraising project. Knowing it was a successful fundraiser for other groups in other areas, they decided to try it themselves, Pearl-Wentzell said. Instead of selling processed pies, however, they decided to go for homemade.

“We hope our timing is good, as this may be an opportunity for some to get a head start on their Christmas baking,” said Pearl-Wentzell.

To make all the pies, Pearl-Wentzell says a group of ladies will come together to create an all-day assembly line. She says each woman will come with her own specialty. For example, some are known to make the flakiest pie crusts, so that will be their job.

“As for my specialty,” says Pearl-Wentzell, “I expect I'll be positioned at the end of the line labelling and packaging.”

The apples and other supplies to make the pies will be sourced locally. Since they are asking the community to support them, they in turn will support the community, she says.

Pies can be ordered by calling Barb at 902-354-3878 and leaving a message. Pre-order by Nov. 10. Pick up is on Nov. 13, starting at 4:30 p.m.

“The secret to a successful pie,” says Pearl-Wentzell, “is willing hands and a cheerful spirit. We have plenty of both.”
