The Town of Shelburne held a public meeting to glean from the residents what their thoughts were on creating an industrial zone on the Ohio Road.

With a microbrewery setting its sites on opening its business in the neighbourhood, it first needs to see the town allow an industrial company to set up on the Ohio Road between the newly redesigned intersection and the 103 intersection.

The town did not expect there to be much opposition to rezoning but local resident Calvin Butler stood up to speak on behalf of himself and 18 other neighbours against the town’s suggestion to rezone.

“We were concerned with the rezoning to industrial,” said Butler.

He said that they were not opposed at all to the brewery but did not want the area rezoned and have other industrial company’s set up shop.

Before the brewing company, the Boxing Rock Brewing Company had been planning to open their business in Shelburne’s historic district.

Butler suggested that the town change their bylaws to allow a brewery on the list of acceptable commercial businesses rather than rezoning the whole area to industrial.

“There is a great industrial park in Sandy Point,” said Butler.  He added that with so many prospective businesses coming in to the area, it would be wise to preserve the area for subdivisions.  “Land is at a premium in town.”

There were about 40 people in attendance at the meeting.

People voiced both their support and like Butler their interest in having the approval for the brewery to be allowed set in motion a different way.

Dylan Heide, CAO for the Town of Shelburne said that he wouldn’t know what council would decide until the meeting.

“It was good to see so many showing an interest in their community and getting engaged,” he said.
