Shelburne Rebel girls win regional title

Rebels win senior girls’ regional title

The Shelburne Rebels will be going for the NSSAF Division III Senior Girls provincial basketball championship this weekend, after capturing the regional banner on Feb. 21 in New Germany.

Shelburne opened the regional tournament against Digby, jumping to a quick start to score 25 points in the first quarter. At half time the Rebels were up 48-38, maintaining the lead to win 82-72 and advance to the championship game. “We managed to get excellent outside shooting and established a strong inside game, something that had been lacking in previous games,” said coach Phil Callan, noting it was the team’s highest scoring game so far this season.

Leading shooters for the Rebels were Paula Christie with 23 points, Katie Locke, 17, and Chelsea Goulden, 14. Emily Keeler had a stellar evening shooting from outside, scoring nine points.

Shelburne met New Germany in the banner contest. A slow start netted a 28-26 half-time deficit for the Rebels, who picked it up in the second half to tie the game 38-38 at the start of the fourth quarter, then going on to score 22 points to outpace New Germanys 61-51. Paula Christie notched 17 points for Shelburne with 14 from Katie Locke, and 10 from Megan Crosby.

The Rebels were cheered on by a strong contingent of Shelburne fans, which was greatly appreciated by the team, said Callan.

The team was given a hero’s welcome when they returned home that evening, escorted through town by a contingent of police and fire department vehicles.

This was the first regional banner won by a SRHS senior girls basketball team since 1993. This weekend Shelburne will be one of eight teams vying for the provincial division III championship in Springhill. The three-day tournament opens Thursday (March 5).
