Former Shelburne resident sets school javelin record in U.S.

Former Shelburne resident Adam Wolkins set a new school record for the javelin throw at Cowley County Community College at Arkansas City, Kansas on May 16.

Wolkins all-time personal best throw was made at the National Junior College Athletic Association's Championship Track and Field meet held at Levelland, Texas on May 16-18. He dominated the field with a throw of 70.84 meters. Second place was some 14 feet less.

Adam won the NJCAA Javelin Championship ring last year as a Freshman with a throw of 67.43 meters which placed him number nine all-time at University of Nebraska.

In attendance at NJCAA Nationals were Adam's parents James and Karen Wolkins from Middle Ohio, Shelburne County, Nova Scotia; Adam's Grandparents Don and Linda Wolkins from Raven's Nest, Louisville, Nebraska, and Adam's sister Rhonda Wolkins. Adam's throw of 70.84 meters (232 feet, 5 inches) places him at number four all time at University of Nebraska at Lincoln, Nebraska. Adam's goal is to break the all-time record at UNL which is 76.64 meters and is also the Big 12 Conference record. Earlier this year, Adam was recruited by track and field teams at Division I schools in the United States.

He accepted a scholarship offer from UNL and will join the UNL Track and Field team this fall. The UNL scholarship is the highest single event scholarship ever offered by UNL. Adam intends to major in Fitness and Nutrition. He will have two years of Division I eligibility remaining with his enrollment at UNL in August.

Adam intends to try out for the Canadian Olympic Team in July of this year.
