Shelburne hosts successful tournament

By Mark Roberts THE COAST GUARD The Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation Division III Girls Provincial Basketball Championships March 1-4 in Shelburne was an overwhelming success, even when delayed by a winter storm, says tournament director, John Huskilson.

The Dalbrae Academy Dragons won the championship while players from the Digby Lady Mariners picked up silver medals. The Shelburne Rebels placed third.

Huskilson, who is also the Shelburne Regional High School Rebels’ assistant coach, said, “The girls played well and we’re proud of them. This is the third time in a row they have finished third. We’ve got to get by the semi-finals game sometime but we’re only losing two players (to graduation). We’re going to be competitive again next year.”

He said parents, business owners and volunteers “pulled together” during the March 2 storm day to keep the athletes busy.

They went bowling in addition to watching movies and playing pool at the Sea Dog Saloon. “They had a good time,” Huskilson said. He added, in discussing the overall tournament, “The way the school worked with us was great. The teachers really pulled together.”

He said students and community volunteers, including the parents, should be added to this list. In particular, the hospitality room, which was always filled with an enormous amount of food, overwhelmed some of the visiting players and coaches.

He added many businesses filled their windows with welcome notes.

During Shelburne’s 46-39 victory over the Halifax Grammar School Gryphons, Laura Mailman netted eight, Eleanor Melanson, 6, Courteney Doane, 18, Kara Nash, 11, and Christine Henneberry, three.

The Rebels then lost 50-39 against Digby during the semi-finals. Mailman had six points, Melanson, two, Doane, 14, Nash, four, and Henneberry, 13.

The Rebels defeated the Springhill Lady Golden Eagles 55-40 to take third place. Mailman scored four points, Melanson, eight, Doane, 14, Nash, two, and Henneberry, 4. Courtney Acker bucketed three, Paige Harding, three, Megan Crosby, two, and Laura Keeler, one.

Dalbrae defeated Digby 48-42 in the championship game.

The other visiting teams were Kings-Edgehill, the Cape Breton Highlands Academy Huskies, and the Bridgewater Lady Vikings.
