SHELBURNE - A 22-year-old Shelburne man has been sentenced for stealing a truck and using it in an assault.

Ronald Kevin William Belong was sentenced in Shelburne provincial court on Oct. 19 on five charges stemming from an incident on April 26.

Belong stole a Dodge Dakota parked outside Maria’s Convenience in Shelburne, sped up Winslow’s Road and hit a man with the truck. He pleaded guilty to the charges in September but sentencing was delayed until a pre-sentence report could be prepared.

He was sentenced 267 days in jail for assault with a weapon, theft of a motor vehicle and two counts of failing to comply with a court undertaking stemming from previous charges.

Belong was credited for remand time and is serving the remaining 178 days in a provincial institution.

He must also submit a DNA sample and was prohibited from owning firearms. He has also been prohibited from driving for two years.

Belong has been in custody since the April 26 incident.
