McCarthy denies reports he is leaving Congress

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is denying reports he is expected to leave Congress before his term ends — telling reporters Friday he still has “work to do,” though he sent different signals in private conversations.

Earlier Friday, multiple sources familiar with McCarthy’s thinking told CNN that he was expected to step down before his term ends.

House Republicans are still reeling after McCarthy was ousted as speaker in a historic vote. Following the vote, McCarthy reopened the race for a new speaker.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and GOP Rep. and Jim Jordan have both launched efforts to become the next speaker, though it’s unclear whether House Republicans will agree on a nominee given the deep divisions in the conference.

After the House voted to expel McCarthy, the California Republican did not say whether he would continue in Congress. “I look at it,” he said when asked at a press conference following the vote.

Politico first reported that McCarthy was considering resigning.
