SHELBURNE, N.S. – Flamenco returns to Shelburne when the Maria Osende Flamenco Dance Company presents three events including performances and workshops during a two-day period at the Osprey Arts Centre on Friday and Saturday, July 13 and 14.
On the Friday night at 7 p.m. in the Osprey Theatre, Maria Osende will host a flamenco dance workshop. She will teach a simple and fun flamenco-flavoured dance routine along with a few simple flamenco dance steps and clapping rhythms. No experience is required.
Joining Maria for the workshop will be some of her students and dancers. It promises to be a fun introduction to flamenco.
After the workshop, the Osprey invites everyone to enjoy a social hour in the lobby with refreshments from the Osprey bar and Spanish tapas appetizers prepared by Osprey volunteers. Admission to the workshop is by donation, suggested at $10.
Whether or not people choose to take the workshop, all are welcome to join what the Osprey is calling a flash mob on the Saturday morning.
Osende and a group of her flamenco students will appear in a quick flash mob-style performance on the waterfront at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning, July 14, during the Shelburne Farmers’ Market. This event will give a quick preview of the stage performance scheduled for later in the evening.
The main event on the Saturday night starts at 7:30 p.m. and features Maria Osende and her company in what promises to be an electrifying flamenco performance. Osende is a highly accomplished dancer and choreographer.
Originally from Spain, Maria Osende was trained in ballet and danced with the National Ballet of Spain. After a successful career in ballet, Osende began to work in flamenco. She is the founder, artistic director and principal dancer with Maria Osende Flamenco Company of Halifax.
