Golden Globes: What’s Next After Hollywood’s Foreign Press Makeover

The Golden Globe Awards will usher in a new era as Dick Clark Productions and investor Todd Bohley’s Eldridge Company acquire the rights, properties and assets of the award show from Hollywood Foreign Press. The association announced on Monday.

As a result, the HFPA will close its doors, according to a statement. All proceeds from the transaction will go to the new Golden Globe Foundation, which will focus on “entertainment-related charitable giving,” according to a news release.

“We are excited to transition from a highly anticipated member-accredited transaction and member-led organization to a commercial organization,” Helen Hohne, president of the HFPA, said in a statement.

The awards show will now be managed by Dick Clark Productions. Boehly, chairman of investment firm Eldridge, said in a statement that the transaction would lead to an “evolution of the Golden Globes.”

This year’s awards show has been marred by controversy for the past two years Los Angeles Times The HFPA, which voted 310 members on the nominees, announced that it had no black members. A case He accused the association of participating in several unethical practices, including “accepting thousands of dollars in wages” from Norwegian journalist Kjersti Flaa. The controversy led NBC to announce that it would not televise the 2022 ceremony.

In response, the HFPA appointed a “Chief Diversity Officer” and added rules barring its members from accepting studio gifts. Hoehne became the new president and recruited 21 different members, 29 percent of whom were black.

Boehly said the new leadership will take a “stronger approach to governance” and expand the “diverse and international voting system” for the awards. The new leadership team will “enforce a professional, safe and accountable environment, and trust new ownership with a new direction for Globes.”
