Canada Day being celebrated in Yarmouth, Digby and Shelburne counties

The following is a look at some of what’s on  tap for Canada Day – Monday, July 1 – in the tri-county region.
Note, this is not a complete list but a sampling of what's taking place throughout the region.

TOWN OF DIGBY

Mayor and councillors’ barbecue, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Fishermen’s Memorial Park. (Rain location: Digby Arena). Cake-cutting at 12:45 p.m. Hotdogs, cake, drinks, plus entertainment by One Night Only.
Two free public swims at Digby Pool, one from 2 to 4 p.m., the other from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

WEYMOUTH

Full day of activities planned, including parade scheduled for 10 a.m.
Other activities include a bake sale and games (11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the fire hall), bouncy castles (11 a.m. to 7 p.m., downtown and at fire hall), flag-raising and cake (12 noon at Sissiboo Landing), chicken barbecue (12 noon at library), magic show (1 p.m., library parking), 50/50 bingo (3 p.m. at legion), Bonded Stock (7 p.m., bandstand/legion), and fireworks (dusk, Sissiboo Landing)

CLARE

Activities will take place at Smugglers Cove, Meteghan (or, in case of rain, at the Clare Veterans Centre in Saulnierville) between 12 noon and 3 p.m. Live music by Momma’s Bourbon, face painting, games for kids, barbecue and more. Flag-raising at noon. Fireworks at dusk behind Villa Acadienne.

YARMOUTH

10:30 – 11 a.m. - Children’s Activities
11 - 11:45 a.m. - Mackenzie School of Dance
11:45 a.m. - noon - Defying Gravity Dance
Noon – 1 p.m. - Opening Ceremonies and the cutting of our Nation’s birthday cake 
1 – 2 p.m. - Muise Tae kwon-do demonstration
2 - 3 pm - Jeremy Watkins Comedy Improv show
3 – 4 p.m. - Triple Trouble
4 – 5 p.m. - Shannon Malone
5 – 6 p.m. - Richard Doyle and Friends

YARMOUTH SOUTH PLAYGROUND

Noon -3:45 p.m. - Canadian Children’s Carnival
1 – 3 p.m. - Entertainment
3 p.m. – O Canada and cutting of cake
3 – 4 p.m. - Cake and prizes

CAPE FORCHU

Visit the Cape Forchu Lighthouse in Yarmouth County to celebrate Canada Day from noon to 2 p.m.  
The event Includes free cake, hot dogs and watermelon; singing of the national anthem; Kite flying display and live Music by Michael Saulnier.

YARMOUTH MOUNTAIN CEMETERY

Bring your lunch to the chapel on Canada Day and enjoy a virtual tour of the cemetery. The tour starts at 12:20 and runs about 50 minutes. Free event. Donations accepted as well. Following the virtual tour, the same tour is being offered as a working tour at 1:15 p.m. and 3 p.m. Come learn more about local history.

PUBNICO

Musée des Acadiens des Pubnicos & Centre de recherche, West Pubnico
Starting at 1 p.m. with flag-raising ceremony
Visit with Elmo, Elsa, Minion

Quilt display in Salle Pauline et Viat

Village historique 
Our Canada at Le Villague historique in Lower West Pubnico are scheduled for 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and will include cake, balloons, live music.  Food on the barbecue for a fee.

CLARK'S HARBOUR

Canada Day activities in Clark’s Harbour include a 5K run (registration at 7:30 a.m.), a street parade (10 a.m. start) and a car show (9 a.m. registration).
The day also will include games of chance, bouncy house and entertainment, including dog tricks with Page Nickerson at 12 noon, Kidzact (1 to 2 p.m.) and MacKenzie School of Dance (2 to 3 p.m.) In the evening it’s a concert by goldrush (8 to 10 p.m.) and fireworks (10 p.m.) SEE MORE CANADA DAY INFO HERE.

LOCKEPORT

10 a.m. – official opening (flag-raising and cake-cutting), Seacaps Park, 61 Hall St.
10 a.m. – 4 p.m. – craft fair in Lockeport fire hall
11 a.m. – Children’s parade, Cenotaph on Hall Street
11 a.m. – Strawberry festival starts, Seacaps Park (in large tent)
1 p.m. - Grand street parade
1:15 p.m. – Mac Huskilson Memorial Anique Car Parade
3:15 p.m. – Pie-eating contest, Seacaps Park,  57 Hall St. In front of lighthouse stage
4 – 6 .m. – baked beans/brown bread supper, Lockeport United Baptist Church
4 :30 p.m. – Waterfront concert, featuring Jamie Cotter & the Country Outlaws, 58 South Water St.
6:30 p.m. – Grease pole, from South Government Wharf
8 p.m. – Canada Day concert, featuring One Meter Up, Seacaps Park
10 p.m. – Fireworks display (In case of bad weather, the Fireworks Display will be held on the next fine evening along with a family field dance.)
