SHELBURNE, NS - Teams from across the province will gather to play ball and raise money for the annual Support the Troops baseball tournament.

The tournament will take place at Grovestein’s ball field in Shelburne Sept. 23.

“We are hoping to get 10 teams to come,” says organizer John Hartley.

Several years ago, Hartley started the tournament to help send care packages to local military residents who were stationed overseas.

Since then, the tournament’s fundraising efforts have moved to support military families through the Military Family Resource Centre.

“A lot of the guys are away and families lean on the resource centre when they are gone,” said Hartley.

This year, Hartley has added a new part to the weekend for children and teens: a ball hockey tournament that will run at the same time as the baseball games.

There will be a 12 to 14 division and a 15 and up division on the tennis courts near Grovestein ballfield.

In addition to the ball hockey tournament, there will be plenty of children’s activities, including a bouncy castle, barbecue and face painting.

Hartley said they will bring a radar gun that will let the kids know how fast they can shoot the ball.

“We are trying to involve more kids activities,” said Hartley.

“We want to have a fun, non-competitive weekend.”

If you go: Register before Sept. 20 by contacting John Hartley through Facebook or by visiting the Support the Troops 2017 ball tournament page on Facebook.
