Woods Harbour Days start June 8

BY CARLA ALLEN The Coast Guard NovaNewsNow.com A frog hopping contest, go-kart races, firemen’s demonstration, parade of lights and fool’s auction are some of the more unusual events that will be taking place during Wood’s Harbour Days the weekend of June 8 -10.

Many of the fishing boats in Woods Harbour will be decorated with lights for the Parade of Lights as part of Woods Harbour Day celebrations. The event takes place Sunday, June 10 at 9 p.m.

Kerrie Bubar, a member of the organizing committee, says eight fishing boats participated in the parade of lights last year. This year they’re hoping at least 10 will show up for the 9 p.m. event on Sunday. “It was beautiful,” she said. “This year they’ll be leaving from the two Woods Harbour wharves, wherever they’re moored, and sailing down Cock-a-wit pass. Then they’ll do a parade by the old moss plant in Shag Harbour. People line up along the shore to watch.”

People have to come with their own frog for the frog-hopping contest on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The amphibians are placed on a racetrack bordered by wood.

Bubar says participants begin looking for the frogs a week in advance and some even travel as far away as Yarmouth searching for speedy hoppers. Members of the Dixon family have held the record over the years, however Erica Townsend leapt away with first last year.

During the fool’s auction at 1:15 on Saturday, bidders battle for the unknown – deciding to gamble on the shape, size and weight of items in bags. “A few years ago someone ended up with a bag of kittens,” said Bubar.

On Friday a scavenger hunt will be held at 6:30 p.m., and there will be a kid’s poker tournament at 7 p.m.

Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. an assortment of games will be held as well as chip bingo, and a silent auction. At noon there will be a lasagna dinner at Rebecca Lodge. Go Kart Races will be held at 4 p.m. on Cemetery Road.

At dusk there will be fireworks and an evening bonfire.

On Sunday a 7 a.m. breakfast is scheduled and in the afternoon a firemen’s demonstration (1 p.m.) and martial arts demonstration (3 p.m.) will be held.

Almost all of the events will be held at the Woods Harbour Fire Hall.
