Barrington Barons defeat Yarmouth Vikings 6-4 in high school hockey

YARMOUTH – The Barrington Barons defeated the Yarmouth Vikings 6-4 in a Valley High School League Friday, Jan. 16 game at the Mariners Centre.

The Barons were first on the scoreboard, taking a 2-0 lead in the first nine minutes of the hockey game. Scoring were Justin Newell (Cameron Atwood) and Wesley Nickerson (Jered Scott). Yarmouth’s Cole Jacquard (Sam Boudreau, Kirby Maillet) scored around 13 minutes into the period to make it a 2-1 game after one period.

Early in the second period, at the 2:35 mark, the Barons pulled ahead 3-1 on a goal by Jered Scott (Cameron Atwood). Yarmouth later narrowed the score to 3-2 on a goal at 6:05 by Dylan LeBlanc (Brad Jones). The Barons were able to widen their lead during the second period to 5-2 on goals scored by Cameron Atwood (Justin Newell) at 7:19 and Justin Newell (Jered Scott) at 13:33. However, two late second-period goals by the Vikings – one scored on the power play with 1:59 remaining by Steven Moore (Maguire Breton and Jacob Surette) and the other with 7.5 seconds remaining scored by Kirby Maillet (Brayden Donaldson, Liam Eyre), made it a 5-4 game at the end of two periods.

The score stayed 5-4 throughout the third period until there were only 44.8 seconds left in the game. Yarmouth had pulled its goalie for the equalizer and it appeared the Vikings were expecting an icing call to be made on a Barrington shot towards their net, as they failed to play the puck. There was no icing call and the Barons’ Cameron Atwood seized the advantage and tapped the puck into the empty Vikings net for the 6-4 win.

There were very few penalties during the game, only six were called.

For the Barons, who have had a shootout loss and an overtime loss, this was their first regulation league win of the season in 13 games played. This was the second league meeting between the two teams. The Vikings had won the first game 8-4, which was played back in October.
