YARMOUTH – The Digby Mariners edged out the Yarmouth Vikings 8-7 in a high-scoring first season match-up between the two teams in Yarmouth on Saturday, Oct. 22.

Yarmouth opened the scoring about 5 minutes into the first period on a goal by Brad Jones. Digby answered back at 8:01 with a goal by Logan Bell. A goal later by Isaac Moore put the Vikings ahead 2-1 at the end of the first.

In the second period with Yarmouth in the box, Digby, playing its first game of the Valley High School Hockey League season, scored the tie goal and go-ahead goals, both on the power play, off the sticks of Dawson Acker and Bell, his second goal of the game. Other second-period goals by the Mariners were scored by Braden Trimper and Owen Titus.

Yarmouth’s Brad Jones scored three more goals in the second period, two of which were scored on the power play. The game was tied 5-5 after two periods. Jones is one of 8 returning players on the Vikings, which saw 10 Grade 12s graduate last year.

In the third period Jones again scored to put the Vikings up 6-5. Digby came back with a goal by Owen Titus to tie it 6-6. Dawson Acker went bar-down to put Digby up 7-6 with 8:28 remaining. On a later play the Viking’s Jones was pulled down attempting a shot on net and was given the penalty shot. He scored his 6th goal of the game to knot the score 7-7 with 4:29 left in the game.

Digby’s Owen Titus completed his hat-trick on a spinning one-timer at 2:27 to give Digby the go-ahead 8-7 goal. Yarmouth got the breakaway with around 10 seconds remaining in the game but the shot went wide of the net and the Vikings didn’t get another shot off in time to tie the game.

Both teams played a lot of the game shorthanded. Digby had 13 penalties and Yarmouth had 16.

The two teams meet again in Digby on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m.
