Firecrackers win: Bear River ladies annual softball game for fire dept

BEAR RIVER – Bottom of the seventh and the Fire Crackers come to bat down by seven runs.

Looked like it was all over but the crying.

Never mind the seventh was the final inning, never mind it was all you can eat – meaning no limit on the number of runs that could be scored – the Fire Crackers had only managed four runs all game.

And then it happened.

The bases were loaded. Then one out. Then a run, then another. And another.

Sandbagging? Late bloomers?

Somehow, some way the Fire Crackers clawed back to within one.

Until finally, with still just one out and two on base, Heather Robicheau smashed a hard shot down the right field foul line to drive in runs by Amina Effindy and Cindy Theriault – the tying and the winning runs.

And just like that the Fire Crackers pulled off an eight-run rally to beat the Cherry Pits 12-11 in the second annual ladies softball game for the Bear River Fire Department.

It was the second win for the Fire Crackers in a pre-Cherry Carnival tradition that got its start last year as a way to raise money for the fire department.

Last year the canteen sales and boot drive brought in $600. This year they made $694.95 plus the Royal Bank donated another $1,000 to make a $1,694.95 total.
