Cape Sable Island’s Aaron Nickerson has earned the 2012 Player of the Year Award from the Nova Scotia Golf Association.
Nickerson topped the leaderboard in points earned during the season at sanctioned tournaments across the province to claim the award for the second time in three years. He also earned the honour in 2010.
For Nickerson, the season highlight was winning his second provincial Mid-amateur championship on June 24, rebounding from four strokes down with five holes left to play to edge playing Glenn Robinson by one stroke. Nickerson also won the title in 2008.
The win sent Nickerson to the Canadian Mid-amateur Championships in B.C. as the leader of Team Nova Scotia, where he failed to advance after the two rounds,
On Nova Scotia greens, Nickerson started the season by winning the Northumberland Classic in Pugwash, setting a new course record of five under par (67) on the second day of the tourney. He wrapped it up by capturing the 40th annual Jack Frost tournament in Clare. In between he placed second in both the Pubnico and Yarmouth invitationals. Nickerson also competed in the provincial men’s amateur but “putter problems” placed him 15th.
Nickerson will be presented with the NSGA Player of the Year award on Oct. 27 at the Mountain golf course in Truro.
