This year’s 2011 Lobster Festival is going to be bigger than ever.

The committee is currently planning some new events to take place in the Barrington Area in celebration of 25 years of Lobster Festival in Shelburne County.

Opening Ceremonies are at the Barrington Arena with The Real Lobsterman of Shelburne County Pageant taking center stage. The committee is looking for lobster fishermen participants to dress the part, show off a talent and answer a few questions to win.

Top prize includes a Nova Scotia Getaway for two and bragging rights of King of the Shelburne County Lobstermen. To qualify you must be a Shelburne County Lobster fisherman (any age). To enter your name contact Suzy Atwood at 637-2015.

On Saturday the Nova Scotia Boat Racers Association will start their season off with their first exhibition race for 2011 at the Cape Sable Island Causeway. The long-awaited return of these boat races to the area saw large turn outs last year and are sure to draw a lot of attention this year. The committee is also planning some events at the beach which includes games for kids, the Annual Lobster Eating Competition and a new Seafood Chowder Cook Off. The committee is asking local organizations to provide their version of seafood chowder. At the event the public will be asked to taste test and vote on who has the best Seafood Chowder in Shelburne County. Organizations that would like to participate can call Shannon at 875-1542. Winners receive a trophy to display, cash prize and bragging rights to the Best Seafood Chowder in Shelburne County for the year.

Also on Saturday the committee is starting the first annual “The Great Lobsterman Challenge” Teams of two will be racing through an obstacle course of “lobsterman duties” like rowing a dory to haul a pot, coiling rope, splicing, dragging buoys and more. This competition will not only be a display of strength but also endurance. Sure to be a fun event to watch!  Winners will receive a prize and bragging rights as the top Great Lobstermen Challenge champions. To enter your name contact Suzy at 637-2015.
