A fisherman died after a fall from a spar on the Savana & Jax on Tuesday, July 23.

Yarmouth RCMP are investigating but say there is nothing suspicious about a fishing accident that claimed the life of a local fisherman on Tuesday.

Police say Paul Vernon "Brex" Malone, 55, from Lower East Pubnico, fell from a spar and died as a result of his injuries. He was a crewman on the sword fishing boat "Savana & Jax".

Mike Bonin, a spokesperson with the Halifax Rescue Coordination Centre, said a call was received around 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 23 that a fishermen had fallen and had suffered head injuries.

A helicopter, fixed wing aircraft and a Coast Guard cutter were heading to the scene to assist but the fisherman died from his injuries before help arrived.

Yarmouth RCMP were notified of the accident a short time later. At approximately 6 a.m. Wednesday morning, the fishing vessel arrived in East Pubnico and was met by Yarmouth RCMP members.

The incident remains under investigation by the RCMP and the Nova Scotia Labour Board.
