Letter: Sign stealers causing Town grief -Shelburne Mayor

Signs are being damaged or going missing in the Town of Shelburne.
Signs are being damaged or going missing in the Town of Shelburne.

None

Those who vandalize or steal the Town’s street, traffic and construction signs probably think they are committing a victimless prank but they couldn’t be more wrong. Not only are these signs costly to replace – costing taxpayers’ money that could be put to far better use – their theft also causes inconvenience to motorists, can delay emergency responders or could even cause a serious accident.

The Town spends thousands of dollars on these signs each year with individual signs costing between $30 and $70 dollars; many of these are purchased as replacements for damaged or stolen signs.

In most cases the theft or vandalism of street, traffic and construction signs will be prosecuted as theft or vandalism, however if a such a theft – for example theft of a construction zone sign – leads to an injury, then the thieves may be found criminally liable for the injury as well.

One thing we can all do is try to be a little more vigilant around our neighborhoods, and make sure to immediately report it whenever we notice someone stealing a sign. The number to call Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m, is 875-2490; after hours, dial 9-1-1.

Mayor Karen Mattatall,

Town of Shelburne
