SHELBURNE, N.S. – With the new guildhall almost complete, the Town of Shelburne is looking to the community to help celebrate its grand opening this spring.

The town wants to celebrate all of the possible opportunities that could be held at the hall and is looking for musicians, dance groups, yoga workshop participants and artists who would like to be a part of the launch.

The grand opening will be a weekend-long event from May 26 to 28.

It will be a free event for all who want to participate or to enjoy.

It will also launch the beginning of farmers’ market season.

“We want to showcase all of the things we can do at the new guildhall,” says Dylan Heide, the town’s CAO.

The town has also been looking towards the first year the facility will operate and has established a program of free performances so that residents can experience the new guildhall.

“We have a pretty exciting schedule,” said Heide.

The guildhall project is 90 per cent complete, with some finishing details to be completed.

The $300,000 project was financed equally through the town and ACOA.

Some of the features of the new facility are designed around past uses of the previous guildhall in addition to other possible future uses.

The old guildhall, which was demolished, had started out as a prop building for the movie The Scarlett Letter, which was filmed in Shelburne. It quickly became a much-loved space for events. But having been built as a prop, its construction was never meant to be permanent.

Hence the new structure.

The stage area of the new guildhall is large, accessible and has increased usability with the removal of some pillars from the design. A vaulted ceiling also adds to the spacious feeling of the facility.

A storage area in the back of the guildhall can be accessed by sliding barn doors and can easily double as a green room for live performances.

The electrical function – including lights and receptacles – has been designed with public performances in mind.

If you want to be a part of the talent for the opening launch event contact the town at 902-875-2991 extensions 8 or 5 or send an email to clerk@town.shelburne.ns.ca  or cao@town.shelburne.ns.ca.
