Asked to pose for a picture, Nan MacKean makes the sourest face she can muster until one of her birthday guests suggests a happier expression.

She throws her head back and laughs.

“I guess I can’t get away with it,” she says.

At 106 years old, MacKean may be one of the oldest person (if not the oldest) in Pictou County, but she still has a sharp mind and sense of humour.

MacKean now lives at Valley View Villa but was formerly a resident of Churchville.

She along with her husband Edgar operated service stations in Trenton and Stellarton. They had a dog during those years named Dusty who was well known for carrying money from the customers at the pump into the store.

A graduate of Pictou Academy, she also taught in one-room school houses.

In her free time she enjoyed going to dances with Edgar.

She shared two pieces of advice for those who want to live as long as her – eat well and dance lots.
