Recreation director Jerry Locke says 10,000 steps are equivalent to five miles and that many people don’t achieve that in a day.
“Research shows the average office worker walks 3,000 to 5,000 steps and that’s not enough for optimum health benefits,” he said.
And although some people, like waitresses, may walk the 10,000 steps in a day, the exercise has to be performed at a decent pace to be of value.
“If your normal day is 10,000, you should do more than that to boost it, “ said Locke.
The recreation department has at least 30 step counters available for loan, free of charge, for the challenge. There is also free reference material available.
Participants are requested to register to receive their step counter, log their steps during one or more weeks, then to call in to register for a chance to win $25 or a Take the Roof off Winter toque. If their steps through the week average 10,000 steps a day, their name will go in twice for a chance to win.
Gradually adding physical activity, like walking, to your everyday routine can prevent disease, reduce blood pressure, reduce body fat, improve flexibility and strength, increase self-esteem and energy, improve mood and decrease stress.
To achieve good health strive to take 10,000 steps a day. Consult with your doctor before starting any physical activity program.
