Shoulder pads are back in fashion for women, or at least they are for the hockey players that are gearing up for the 3rd annual Shelburne County Women’s Hockey Tournament.
Teams from Halifax, Barrington and Yarmouth will be going head to head Nov. 7 & 8 with four guaranteed games with the top two teams advancing to the championship game.
All games are three 15-minute stop time periods with a five minute warm-up.
Each game will be awarded a MVP prize including the championship game.
“It’s a fun tournament to get back on the ice after not playing for a while,” says Nicole Jones from the Barrington Women’s Hockey League. Proceeds from the tournament will go to the Barrington Women’s Hockey League.
The Barrington League is soon to start their season of pick-up games on Monday nights.
The league has been running for over 10-years but Jones says that sometimes it is tough to keep it going strong.
“Sometimes it is discouraging when less and less people show up but even still we have a great time,” she says.
“We try to keep it together for the young ones,” says Jones. “Two girls who were 14 showed up at one of our pick-up games,” says Jones. “They fell down a lot but it was good fun for them.”
That is the key for the local league, to get out, have fun and get a good workout at the same time.
At $100 per season or $10 per night it is a pretty affordable membership fee to boot and Jones encourages girls and women 13-years old and up to come out and join the fun.
