A tribute and moment of silence will be held prior to the game start for the five fishermen from Woods Harbour and Cape Sable Island lost to the sea earlier this week, three of whom played for the Ice Dogs.
Tyson Townsend played with the Ice Dogs for four years, recalled long time team manager Steve Crowell, following in the footsteps of his older brother Jeremy Townsend. Tyson’s younger brother Nathan is currently in his third year with the team.
Both Cole Nickerson and Katlin Nickerson also laced up for the Dogs for a few seasons, said Crowell and Joel Hopkins’ brother Jessie “played with us for years so Joel was always around.” Also lost was Billy Jack Hatfield.
The Ice Dogs eliminated the Clare Lions 3-1 in best of five quarter final action this past weekend on the road.
Barrington took a 2-1 series lead on Feb. 15 with a 4-3 overtime win. Nathan Townsend led Sea Star with two goals. Jevon Link posted the winning marker. Matt Goodwin also had a goal.
The Ice Dogs wrapped up the series on Feb. 16 blanking Clare 8-0. Goodwin led the Sea Star boys with a hat trick, with two from Doran Arey and singles from Brydon Ryerson, Chad Newell and Jamie Thomas. Chad Harris turned aside 42 saves for the shutout.
Game two in the semi-final series is slated for Saturday night (Feb. 23). Face-off is 7:30 p.m.
