The Shelburne County Flames wrapped up the season by winning the West Nova Minor Hockey League Peewee A championship on April 9.
The Flames edged the Bridgewater Hawks 3-1 in the banner contest, played in Yarmouth.
The eventual game winner came off a Brogan Fitzgerald breakaway goal setup by Andrew Hunt midway through the final frame. The Flames then held off some late Hawks pressure to take the title. Gabriel Penney and Carman Shaw were the other Flames marksmen. Taran Atwood and Andre Atwood shared the victory in goal.
This was the inaugural season for the new league, and the first championship for SCMHA.
“The flu took our top scorer out of the line-up and others played through it, but our boys really stepped up to the challenge,” said Coach Andrew Holland. “Gabriel Penney was a monster leader for us and everybody followed his work ethic. This was a great way to end the season. Our boys take great pride in the fact that they brought the first championship banner from the new WNMHL to our arena.”
The Flames wrap up the season with a 46-7-3 record. They were the winners of the SCMHA Fall Classic, the Truro KFC Christmas Tournament, and the WNMHL banner. The Flames also won silver in the Wickens Cup and at SEDMHA, as well as competing at the provincial championship tournament.
The coaches would like to thank the boys for a fantastic season on and off the ice. And the Flames would also like to send a thank you to their "clan of fans" who followed the team, as well as the parents for all the time and effort throughout the winter.
