It’s June already, but the Municipality of Barrington is not giving up their quest to have the year of 2009 officially declared as the Year of the Lobster.
The municipality has received sixteen letters of support from other municipal units supporting the designation.
Earlier this year it approached the provincial government and federal government with their request. The municipality received a reply from the office of the premier saying that the province must follow the federal government for proclaiming a “year of” events, but the province could proclaim a Month of the Lobster.
Council decided that December was a suitable month for the designation but hasn’t given up the idea of the Year of the Lobster.
At the June 8 council meeting it was suggested that the newly elected or re-elected MLA for Shelburne County be asked to pursue the year/month of the lobster designation. It was also suggested that the matter be further discussed by the committee of the whole at their next meeting.
A letter is also being sent to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, Gail Shea, requesting a response to council’s request to have 2009 declared Year of the Lobster.
Still no Year of the Lobster proclamation
