RCMP have confirmed local rumours that a package “appearing to be cocaine” was discovered along the shore of a local beach a few weeks ago.
Barrington RCMP Sgt. MJ Deluco offered no other information about the discovery of the package other than refer to a terse, one sentence statement released by her detachment last week.
The shoreline discovery was made less than six weeks after a mysterious sinking of a sailboat off Daniels Head Wharf, Cape Sable Island. Rescue officials who rushed to that scene said at the time it appeared the vessel had been abandoned. No distress call was received.
Some local residents had reported seeing two men dressed in black leaving the vessel via a rubber dingy. Other local residents reported seeing or speaking with one individual from the disabled vessel.
The following day RCMP divers were at the scene. A week later, RCMP sources noted that the sunken vessel was starting to break up as people were starting to find debris along the shore.
At that time RCMP were asking anyone who found debris from the vessel, or who had any information about the vessel or the individual(s) who came ashore to contact the local detachment or Crime Stoppers.
Sgt. Deluco would not speculate on whether police believe the suspected cocaine discovery and the sunken sailboat, an incident that is still under investigation, were connected.
