More than eight years after one of the worst snowstorms in recent memory hit Nova Scotia, the Town of Shelburne is expecting to receive its final disaster relief payment.
The 2004 blizzard, dubbed White Juan because it fell only months after Hurricane Juan, dropped record amounts of snow in some areas of the province and with winds gusting over 100 kilometres an hour the storm built up huge drifts.
When it was all over, the Town of Shelburne was inundated with snow and was forced to spend thousands of extra dollars to bring in heavy equipment for removal.
The Town applied for disaster relief to the tune of $25,000. Three years later, in 2007, it received a little over $5,000 with the remainder left in limbo, waiting for a decision.
Town Chief Administrative Officer Dylan Heide says the province is now ready to pay $20,042 on the claim.
The CAO said that it will take a month before the claim will be processed and finalized.
