The sound of an RCMP helicopter hovering low along the area on Thursday, Aug. 11 heralded the annual effort to eradicate marijuana grow operations in the county.

Shelburne RCMP, backed up by members from Barrington and members of the Halifax-based RCMP Marijuana Grow Operation Enforcement Team waded into local woods to pull about 500 marihuana plants.

Sgt. Ron Prangnell, of the Shelburne RCMP, said the plants were located at four separate locations and were in areas difficult to locate from the ground.

Cpl. Nancy Mason, of the Shelburne County Street Crime Enforcement Unit said the overall goal is to ensure safe and secure communities.

“Marihuana grow operations have been linked to organized crime and violence which are a threat to the communities we live in,” she said.
