The Terry Fox run will be hitting the Western side of the county with three runs to help to raise money for cancer research.

This year marks the 30th Annual Terry Fox Run to take place on Sunday, Sept 19.

To commemorate this event Terry Fox’s parents, Betty and Rolly Fox, randomly picked one run to attend in Canada and the team, the South Side Church 1k Mini Walk, led by Barbara Thurber was chosen.

The event will begin at 10 am and will have a BBQ following.

The Fox’s will be at all three run’s, at the beginning of the Barrington/Clark’s Harbour 10k run starting at 1 pm at the Barrington library and at the end of the Wood’s Harbour 10k run starting at 1 pm at the Wood’s Harbour Ball Field.

They will be at the South Side Run for the entire event.

Betty and Rolly Fox will arrive to the area on Saturday and will be available for a meet and greet from 6:30 to 8 pm on Sept 18 and all are welcome to come.

“The runs are open to everyone,” said Thurber.  “Ours has people ranging from babies to people in their 80’s.”

She said that the 1km walk/run is not strenuous and that most of the people walk, bike, stroller or run.

“It is a great event for the whole family,” she said.

She also said that it is definitely not too late to register and that pledge sheets can be found online and people can register as far up to the day of the run.

“Terry Fox’s goal was for every Canadian to raise $1,” she said.  “If everybody were to do their part it wouldn’t be a lot of work.”

The team has a goal to reach $3000 in funds to match the 30th year of the run.

“Cancer touches everybody,” said Thurber, adding that it is an excellent cause.

Many are proud to be hosting the Fox’s stay in the Municipality of Barrington.

“There are few folk heroes in Canadian history as formidable and inspiring as Terry Fox,” said councilor Shaun Hatfield for the MOB.  “So to host his parents on Cape Sable Island this year is an incredible honour for us, both as a church and as a community.  Terry’s dream beats vibrantly in our hearts and we hope to offer his parents Betty and Rolly the warmest hospitality along with our deepest admiration of their son and family.”
