Unruly ducks are causing a kerfluffle, and even worse – accidents - in the Municipality of Barrington.

The birds are finding the pond in front of the Barrington Library quite to their liking. The number of ducks, and subsequent accidents from motorists trying to avoid them, are increasing.

Councillors discussed the problem at a recent committee of the whole meeting.

“The duck issue is getting to be a problem there,” said councillor Murray Atkinson.

“I think in this last year they’ve increased tenfold. Here a year or so ago there was probably only 75 and I’ve noticed the ducklings all along the shore this year. They do pose a problem to people in the morning. You just turn your head and somebody’s got their brakes on. It could cause a serious accident, injury or death, by that pond there,” he said.

The municipality plans on contacting the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation to request that duck crossing signs be posted in the area and that a photo of ducks crossing Highway #3 accompany the request. Municipal employees will also be investigating further deterrents.

Cars stop there waiting to turn into the library but apparently cars stopped in the exact same spot for ducks are causing accidents?? I'd say inattentive drivers are the problem not the ducks!
