The Municipality of Barrington has a new warden. The resignation of Louise Halliday, announced at the April 12 meeting of council, came as a surprise to many.

Municipal clerk-treasurer Brian Holland says in a letter to council Halliday wrote that the position was very demanding of her time and she felt she couldn’t put the time into it.

Councillors Shaun Hatfield and George El-Jakl were nominated for the position of warden. El-Jakl was elected and sworn in.

Halliday will continue to serve as councillor for District 2, which includes Bear Point, Shag Harbour, Lower Shag Harbour, Atwoods Brook and Doctors Cove, a position she has held since 2000.

She has served as warden since June 26, 2006. In a 2008 interview with the Coast Guard, Halliday expressed her thoughts regarding the position she held on council.

“I have a much better appreciation for elected officials and when the day comes and I am no longer there I will not sit in judgement of those who are in my place.

“It is easy to find fault when you do not know all the facts, nor do you not know how things operate. I will always be grateful for what I have learned from this experience thus far.”
