Local police had a busy night as RCMP seized more than a pound of marijuana, a variety of prescription pills and a quantity of cash in a raid at a Sable River residence on March 2.

Members of the Street Crime Enforcement Unit assisted by Shelburne RCMP, forced open a door because they believed people inside were trying to destroy evidence. Four people inside were arrested. Three were under the age of 18 and were released.

In addition, six marihuana plants and a small indoor marihuana grow operation was seized.

Chad Glen Latham, 23, Sable River, was held overnight in jail and released the following day on conditions, including a house arrest.

He is charged with production of marihuana, trafficking, possession of proceeds of crime and breach of an undertaking.

The same night as the Sable River raid, the street crime unit, assisted again by Shelburne RCMP members and this time with the addition of Barrington RCMP members, conducted two searches of homes in Shelburne.

The first search saw 60 grams of marihuana, various drug items, packing materials and a quantity of cash seized. A 22-year-old man was arrested and later released by police. He will appear in Shelburne Court on June 9 on a marihuana trafficking charge.

A short time later a second search warrant was executed at another Shelburne residence which resulted in the seizure of about 80 grams of marihuana, various drug related items and a quantity of cash.

A 41-year-old Shelburne woman was arrested and released by police to appear in Shelburne Court on May 19. She will face charges of trafficking marihuana.

Police say the two matters were not related to each other.

“The Street Crime Unit was kept busy yesterday investigating these matters and an earlier investigation conducted in Sable River,” said RCMP Cpl. Nancy Mason.
