Little change in Municipality of Barrington tax rates

By Carla Allen THE COAST GUARD NovaNewsNow.com Property tax rates, area fire rates and sewer charges for 2009/10 were approved at the June 22 council meeting of the Municipality of Barrington.

The residential property tax rate at $1.06/$100 is dropping one cent from last year. The commercial rate is $2.63/$100, an increase of .11 cents due to the phasing out of the business occupancy tax.

The farm tax rate is $2.69/acre. Area fire rates are all slightly less than last year: Woods Harbour $.120, Shag Harbour/Bear Point 0.95, Barrington .033, Port Latour .063, Island/Barrington Passage .082 and Port Clyde .068.

Sewer rates are unchanged from last year and are set at $266/unit for Barrington and $300/unit for Woods Harbour.

The tax levy increase from last year’s levy ($4,587,054) is $164,894. Some of the additional taxes will be directed towards an increase in provision for grants, assessment services fees, short term borrowing costs, increase in RCMP and EMO costs, increase in road maintenance costs, sewer and waste management costs, and an increase in the provision for physician recruitment.

Capital expenditures of $1,777,648 include sewer system upgrades, green carts, arena improvements, property services department, recreation and culture, building improvements, building inspector vehicle, C&D landfill, street improvements, capital expenditures from revenues, CSI sewer project and business park.
