Barrington Municipal Council is a little bit miffed as to why their proposal to develop a business park doesn’t fit the criteria for funding under a provincial development trust.
“I regret to inform you that this project does not fit the mandate or objectives of the Community Development Trust,” stated Economic and Rural Development Minister Murray Scott in a letter received by council on May 11.
The municipality applied for funding for the project through the South West Shore Development Authority (SWSDA) earlier this year. The proposed Barrington Business Park would be located on lands behind the former high school site in Barrington Passage, and would open up lands for commercial and industrial development.
The letter went on to state that the objective of the trust “is to support long-term, sustainable, economic development focused on transitioning vulnerable communities and foundation industries,” and that as such “is one of a number of resources that can be used to provide strategic investment and stimulus to our rural economies.”
“That purpose or mission statement fits us very much,” said councilor Shaun Hatfield. “From my perspective our project fits nicely.”
With comments around the table that the decision not to fund the project was contradictory to the trust mandate, council agreed to write the Minister for clarification and an explanation.
