Sydney Mines accused given date for bail hearing


SYDNEY — A Sydney Mines man is now scheduled to have a bail hearing Oct. 3 in relation to a brutal assault on a woman in her home.

Michael Francis Corbett, 38, of Main Street, is charged with robbery with violence relating to the theft of 24 morphine sulphate pills. He is also facing charges of aggravated assault, possession for the purpose of trafficking (morphine pills), assault with a weapon (a wooden club) and mischief by smashing a telephone.

The incident is to have occurred Aug. 27 in the home of a 57-year-old Baddeck Forks woman who was hospitalized as a result of her injuries. Police found the woman in her home beaten and barely conscious. The woman and Corbett are known to each other.

Corbett continues to be on remand at the Cape Breton Correctional Centre pending the outcome of his bail hearing.
