Planning for Christmas is already on the minds for many and with it comes the ever-important season of giving.
The Giving Tree will be back in Shelburne this year but under the direction of the Shelburne Lion’s Club.
The Giving Tree is a Christmas tree that will be found in Woodworker’s Home Hardware, the Scotia Bank and Enterprise Square.
Instead of holding glittering, fragile glass bulbs, the tree’s boughs capture a much more special object, the name of a child.
Each tag on the trees hold a name of a child from the Shelburne area who without the help of a donation won’t have anything special to open on Christmas morning.
“It is still alive and well,” said Karen Matatall about the Giving Tree tradition. “The gifts that are given go to children in Shelburne.”
She asks that if anyone knows of a child who might benefit, they can contact the Lion’s Club on Nov 19 and 20 and the trees will be up from Nov 20 to Dec 22.
On the tag with the child’s name there will be the child’s choice of toy they would like to receive. Unwrapped toys can be dropped off at the Ideal Discount Store in the mall or the Men’s Place Barber Shop in Enterprise Square by Dec 20.
“People really love doing it,” said Matatall. “Lot’s of businesses will participate in the giving tree instead of buying gifts for each other.”
