The past three months have been a whirlwind of activity for aspiring model Jessica Atwood.

The 13-year-old, Grade 8 Barrington high student has appeared on runways in Yarmouth, Halifax and Montreal in hopes of pursuing her lifelong dream of a modeling career and things sound promising.

Atwood got her big break in her first runway appearance at the Model & Talent Search Canada competition in Halifax on Sept. 6. The modeling scouts liked what they saw, said mom Karen Peters, with Atwood advancing to competition in Montreal on the Nov. 1 weekend.

In the meantime Atwood entered a modeling workshop and competition in Yarmouth, Bitten by the Modeling Bug?, where she was one of the five finalists, advancing to Halifax where she was third runner-up in the City Models runway competition.

Then it was off to Montreal for three days of modeling, competitions, seminars and opportunities. “I wasn’t nervous until I got to the stage and was one person away,” said Atwood. “Then I got butterflies in my stomach.. when I got off the stage I was still shaking.”

Nervous or not Atwood made a good impression, with four agents expressing an interest in her. “They all thought she was gorgeous,” said Peters. “They want me to keep them updated over the next year.”

At 5’5”, the agents would like Atwood to be several inches taller. She also needs some dental work to fix a gap in her teeth, said Peters.

For Atwood the Montreal show was a great learning experience. “It showed me a lot more about the business than what I knew about. It showed me what it would be like to be a model,” she said.

As part of the Bitten by the Modeling Bug? competition Atwood was the subject of a photo shoot in Halifax on Nov. 9 and will be featured in an upcoming issue of Faces magazine.

Runway and photography are Atwood’s two main modeling interests. “I’d like to be on the cover of a magazine someday,” she mused.

Meanwhile Atwood is keeping busy with schoolwork, friends and basketball.
