Veterans will be honored and remembered over the next week in Shelburne County through school visits, special receptions and Remembrance Day services.
All county schools will be visited by Royal Canadian Legion members and veterans during the week leading up to Nov. 11. Shelburne Sobeys is having a reception to honor and recognize veterans on Nov. 7.
On Nov. 11, Remembrance Day services will be held in Lockeport, Shelburne, Barrington, Clark’s Harbour and Woods Harbour.
In Shelburne members will march from the Royal Canadian Legion on Water Street to the Shelburne Civic Centre on King Street for the 11 a.m. service.
Following the service, legion members will attend Roseway Manor and conduct a ceremony there for the residents.
The Shelburne legion will also be conducting a service at the Carleton Church on Nov. 9. “The service was started by Ernie Demings but he can’t do it himself anymore because of health reasons so we’re going to do it for him,” said legion president Fred Molyneaux.
In Lockeport the service will be held at the Lockeport Baptist Church starting at 11 a.m., with wreath laying at the cenotaph following the service.
In Barrington, the Remembrance Service gets underway at 10:45 a.m. at the Wesleyan Church, followed by a parade to the cenotaph for wreath laying.
In Woods Harbour, the Remembrance Day service starts at 9:45 a.m. at the Calvary United Baptist Church.
In Clark’s Harbour, the Remembrance Day service starts at 9:45 a.m. at the United Baptist Stone Church. A service will also be held at the Stoney Island cenotaph following the Clark’s Harbour service.
Both the Clark’s Harbour and Shelburne legions will be holding banquets on the evening of Nov. 11, while the Lockeport legion will be holding a potluck luncheon following the Remembrance Day service.
