There were butterfly kisses at the Clark’s Harbour Elementary School on June 19 when students from Grades 1 to 3 set free the Painted Ladies they had raised from the caterpillar stage.

“They really enjoy this activity,” said Grade 2/3 teacher Ruth Thomas as students joyfully followed the just released butterflies around the schoolyard. “They get a lot out of it.”

The butterfly supply arrived from Ontario four weeks ago as very tiny caterpillars, said Thomas. Kept in a netted butterfly cage it took one week for each life stage of the caterpillar to butterfly metamorphous.

Students in Meredith Nickerson Ross’s Grade 1/2 class also took part in the project, which was incorporated living things science curriculum for all three grade levels.
