Shelburne County will be hosting the Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute (MTRI) as they bring a three day series of discussion seminars to Shelburne County through the work of Jesse Saroli the MTRI Outreach Coordinator and Dayle Eshelby of Lockeport.
Three specialists/keynote speakers will deliver a discussion seminar on one of each of three topics – loons, old forests and turtles.
The Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute (MTRI) is a non-profit co-operative that advances collaborative research, monitoring, and management that promotes sustainable use of natural resources in southwestern Nova Scotia. The idea for MTRI's travelling roadshow seminar series arose as an offshoot of the seminar series that is held at the MTRI facility. The roadshow was envisioned as a means to bring the seminars about environmental topics to people in communities in southwest Nova Scotia who might not otherwise be able to attend the in-house seminar series.
Amanda Lavers, a Biologist with keen on Acadian Forest has been involved with MTRI and the Southwest Nova Biosphere Reserve for more than ten years will be talking on Loons. Alain Belliveau, an expert in forest technology and wildlife conservation has worked with MTRI on forest carbon projects, salmon restoration projects and more will be speaking on Old Forests. Brad Toms of Ontario a specialist in Environmental Science who spent time on Sable Island has done work in species monitoring including turtle, bears, rattlesnakes and Piping Plovers will talk about turtles.
MTRI is partnering with the Lockeport and Barrington Schools and the McKay Library to further environmental preservation and interpretation opportunities to develop new and existing strengths, awareness and connections.

April 18: Shelburne: Old Forests: Alain Belliveau: MTRI Ecosystems Researcher - Location: McKay Public Library, Shelburne
April 17: Barrington: Turtles: Brad Toms: MTRI Wildlife Biologist - Location: Barrington Municipal High School
