Locals can now have the opportunity to shimmy into shape as belly dancing becomes the newest of dance classes to be offered in the area.

Sacha Begg has been teaching Egyptian belly dancing in Yarmouth and is now offering a course on Monday nights at Shelburne Regional High School.

Begg said that after the 10 week course people will feel better about their bodies and the way that it moves.

“You will enjoy this exotic form of dance and not even realize you’re exercising,” she said.

There are different dances taught in the coarse and Begg will lead participants through shimmies and hip circles as she gets everybody moving to the rhythm of the Middle Eastern beat.

“As you get into the course you will find yourself having an increased flexibility,” she said.

The dance also helps to enhance movement, core strength and self-esteem.

“Plus it’s fun,” said Begg.  “It’s one hour that is not about your husband, kids or work…it’s an hour all about you.”

Begg said it would be best to wear work out gear similar to a yoga class and to either have bare feet or sneakers.  She also asks people to bring a yoga mat for warm up and a bottle of water.

She hopes to continue on with several variations of the coarse including beginner, veil work, dancing with zils or finger symbols, choreography, improvisation and music appreciation.

Begg said that belly dancing is a dance that any woman of any size or age can do.

“It is low impact and is nice for enhancing the feminine curves,” she said.  “It looks beautiful on all body types, feels really good and is fun.”

Those interested in joining her next class in April can contact Allison Hallett at 902-875-2831 to register.
