Ladies with Lungs. That’s the name The Osprey Arts Centre has given its July 10th showcase of some of the best women singer/songwriters in Shelburne County and nearby counties. Susan Hoover, who books performers for the Osprey was hearing from more and more women with great voices and interesting songs. Of course, she thought immediately of Shelley Meisner who will headline this show. Shelburne audiences haven’t heard from Shelley for a while and she felt it was high time to hear her again.
Over the past four years since she moved from Shelburne County Shelley has been fronting Beyond Brazil, the bossa nova/samba ensemble that has played throughout the Maritimes, notably at The Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival in Fredericton and the Atlantic Jazz Festival. She will also be playing at Harmony Bazaar Festival of Women and Song later this month.
Several local residents who appear from time to time at the Osprey, but not as feature artists will also appear in this show. Jennifer Bell, who now lives on Cape Island, has a wonderful voice and a cutting edge choice of material. Kathy Bennett, living in Barrington has a voice that cries out for attention. She is lead singer with Backtrac. She will be singing with her daughter Jade, still a student at Shelburne Regional High School, lead singer for The Hold Up.
Just to add spice to Ladies With Lungs, Kate Surette, originally from Yarmouth but now living in Halifax will join the Ladies. Kate is a frequent performer at Lockeport’s Harmony Bazaar and recently acted as workshop leader for song writing workshops at SRHS.
As a final treat, Eliza Hyde, another student from SRHS will open Ladies with Lungs at the piano with a song. Eliza is a newcomer to the musical scene, having appeared for the first time at the Osprey at Hubbubgo this past spring.
So come out and enjoy an evening of music by some of the best singers around, Saturday, July 10 at 8 PM. Tickets are $15, $5 for youth, available at The Whirligig Bookshop, 875 1117 or at the door.
