At the Dec. 7 committee of the whole meeting, a motion was passed to recommend to council that two contracts due to expire on March 30, 2010, be renewed.

Alternatives to the service were discussed briefly, during which cost prohibitions became apparent.

Residual waste, organic waste and recyclables from the municipality are sent to the Region of Queens daily.

The cost of recyclables will start at $162/ton. The cost of this waste stream, as well as organics ($110.49/ton), is based on the consumer price index over the last three years and is expected to rise annually.

A 20-year contract for the transport of residuals is already in place with the Region of Queens.
