EastLink has pushed back its deadline to bring 100% wireless broadband Internet coverage to Nova Scotians in South Shore communities by the end of 2009.

This is part of the Broadband for Rural Nova Scotia initiative aiming to bring wireless broadband Internet to all Nova Scotians.

In 2007, EastLink was contracted to bring wireless Internet to residents in Zones 5 and 6 – Shelburne and Queens Counties fall under Zone 5.

EastLink will service 105 tower sites around the South Shore. The company anticipates 80 of these sites will be completed by the end of December, with 29 fully serviced.

The company anticipates the remaining sites will be completed between January and May 2010, citing problems with challenging geography and regulatory processes.

Jill Laing, an EastLink spokesperson, says the company will upload an enhanced map on its website by this week. “It will give a weekly blow-by-blow,” says Laing. The map will feature a timeline as each new site is serviced.

Currently, only 250 homes in Baker Settlement, and 1,000 homes in Caledonia are connected.
