A recently formed Physician Recruitment Committee believes a new clinic is the best approach to recruit and retain physicians to work in Shelburne County.
The proposed facility will have the capability of being able to upgrade to the latest in electronic medical record abilities and be of adequate size to house six to eight health care providers.
In addition to establishing a website, the committee is sending a mail out to physicians across the country and has been in contact with the Dalhousie Medical School to determine what new graduates are looking for.
Meetings have been held with Frank Anderson, CEO of the South West Shore Development Authority and Yarmouth Industrial Commission to determine what specific requirements will be. The committee is also reviewing sites for the clinic.
The committee has the support of the four other municipal units in Shelburne County. The Municipality of Barrington’s support may even include financial assistance… eventually. “Municipalities are going to have to dig a little deeper to help bring health care to their communities,” said Warden Louise Halliday.
“This may put your taxes up but you have to ask yourself, is putting your tax up one or two cents worth it? I think it is.”
Councillors discussed the issue at the Jan. 26 meeting during which it was made clear that Barrington’s efforts to recruit physicians for their existing clinic, the Community Health Centre, would continue.
Now that the committee has support from all five municipal units, it will begin the process of hiring someone to begin work on the cost analysis and other details associated with the new clinic.
