Their existence gave birth to the Shelburne Longboat Society, which can now be used in marketing opportunities for the region, says the chair of the organization.
Jim Mahaney presented an outline of upcoming events that the society would like to participate in, including an “unsurpassed opportunity” to present the boats on a world stage scenario at the 250th anniversary of the founding of the Royal Navy Dockyard in Halifax, July 17 – 19.
“We’re going to be face to face to close to a million visitors over the course of the event,” said Mahaney.
Close to 60 tall ships and 25 longboats are expected to participate in the event.
In order to prepare for the dockyard celebrations, the society, which is composed of volunteer members, must clean the boats, possibly add masts and sails, and amend costumes to period standards.
Other events and opportunities for the longboats include parades, rowing events, races, schools and historical groups, fairs, bazaars, festivals, the Saltscape expo, and the 100th anniversary of the RCN in 2010.
Mahaney said he is not approaching council for funding at this point.
“I’m not asking for money from anyone until we have a business plan to show where the money will go,” he said.
Mahaney added that the society would also accept in-kind offers of assistance.
