In a letter from South West Shore Development Authority to the Municipality of Barrington, development officer Joan Bower wrote that cruise ship passengers to the province have been growing.
“As of September there have been 217,000 visits during 2008, a notable increase over 2007 when there were only 142,472 visits,” she wrote.
The workshop, which will be held in late January or early February, will last one and a half days. Subsequent meetings will be held at least every other month.
Aquila Tours, a Canadian tour operator that specializes in delivering shore excursions to cruise lines when they anchor in the Bay of Fundy, has proposed to deliver the consultative workshop.
Bower suggests that visitors who stop in Shelburne may want to come back for a more extensive stay.
“If we are successful in attracting cruise ships, there will be an infusion of money into the economy from a variety of sources – ship supplies, tours, goods purchased, attraction fees, and transportation. There is also a potential for increased immigration. Many of our immigrants first arrived as tourists. They liked the area so much, they stayed,” she wrote.
Councillor Cecil O’Donnell will be representing the Municipality of Barrington at the workshop, which is being hosted by the Shelburne County Port Readiness Steering Committee.
The committee is composed of the Shelburne and Area Chamber of Commerce, municipal leaders, Discover Shelburne County Tourism Association and other economic development groups.
